Netflix this week updated the player on the PlayStation 3, bringing the experience on the console more in line with what members are used to on the Web.
The player now lets users manage audio and subtitle channels directly from the PS3. There’s no need to return to the browser, and this can be done with the pad or a Blu-ray remote.
“Select ‘Audio & Subtitles’ and all options for that title are presented,” Netflix said in a blog post(Opens in a new window). “Members who use the accessory Sony PS3 Blu-ray remote control can access ‘Audio & Subtitles’ directly from the remote control by pressing ‘Subtitles.'”
You can also opt not to share with social networks a title that you’re currently watching.
Rewinding and fast-forwarding is a lot smoother, Netflix said. Image loading is dramatically improved, so scanning the movie for a specific scene will be easy. Also, the left arrow key on the PS3 pad will rewind 10 seconds a useful shortcut.
This update is out on PS3 now (see the video below for more), and will soon roll out to select Smart TVs and Blu-ray players. It comes shortly after an update to Netflix’s iPad app, which allowed users to see 25 or more rows on Watch Instantly.
In December, Netflix revealed that the Sony console is the most popular platform to stream Netflix content, surpassing the PC, Wii, Xbox 360, Blu-ray players, smart TVs, and more.
Yesterday, meanwhile, Sandvine said in a report that on fixed networks in North America, Netflix is the “unchallenged leader” when it comes to traffic. It controls 32.3 percent of downstream traffic during peak periods. Coming in second is YouTube, with 17.1 percent of peak downstream traffic in North America, up from 13.8 percent last year. YouTube, though, is still the global leader.
In June 2012, users streamed over one billion hours of content, according to Netflix, a number that increased to 4 billion hours in the first quarter.
