Nvidia on Monday released a major over-the-air software update for its Shield gaming device, adding support for 1080p resolution and 60 frames-per-second over Ethernet in the handheld’s GameStream PC-syncing mode.
The update, which enhances features added to the Android-based Shield in October, also bumps up GameStream performance over WiFi to 720p with 60 frames-per-second, according to AndroidCentral(Opens in a new window).
GameStream makes thousands of PC games compatible with Shield, including titles like Batman: Arkham Origins and Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag.
The October software update bumped Shield up to Android 4.3 and marked the official launch of GameStream, which lets users stream games from their PC to the Shield over a local network and was available as a beta feature around the time Nvidia launched the handheld. To connect the handheld to a PC via GameStream, Shield users must have an Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 or higher graphics card in their PC. The feature doesn’t work with rigs equipped with Radeon GPUs supplied by Advanced Micro Devices.
Another feature added to Shield in October and enhanced in the more recent update is the Shield Gamepad Mapper, a programming interface that lets users map the physical gamepad controls of the Shield to touch-screen controls on certain games.
The improved Gamepad Mapper has added community profiles as a beta feature, letting users “share, browse, and rate gamepad mapping profiles,” according to Android Central. Nvidia has also added an “accelerated cursor” option for Shield’s joystick mouse mode. Other new ways to refine how the gamepad operates via the Gamepad Mapper include the ability to “map gyro simulation to analog thumbsticks with a new ‘motion sensor’ feature” and the ability to use the right thumbstick to look around in first-person perspective games, according to the site.
Finally, Shield users can now auto-hide the status bar in full-screen mode if they choose, and view it by swiping down from the top of their screen, Android Central reported.
The update is available today for free via Nvidia’s Shield site(Opens in a new window). To access the additional features in GameStream, users will also need to download the latest version of the company’s GeForce Experience software to their PC.
