There are tons of fun mobile games out there, and playing on your phone is super convenient, but it’s not quite the same as playing on a dedicated gaming handheld device. Now, Samsung wants to give you the best of both worlds.

The Korean electronics giant on Thursday unveiled(Opens in a new window) a new GamePad device, which instantly turns your Galaxy smartphone or tablet into a portable gaming console. The GamePad attaches to devices ranging from 4 inches to 6.3 inches and connects through Bluetooth pairing.

Alongside the device, Samsung released a new Mobile Console app, which offers “reasonably priced console-quality games without the expense of additional gaming systems,” Samsung said.

With the GamePad, you’ll no longer have to rely on your phone’s touch screen. It boasts an 8-way directional pad, two analog sticks, four action buttons, and two trigger buttons. There’s also a Play button, which quickly takes you to the Mobile Console app.

At launch, the app will offer 35 dedicated games across a variety of categories, including traditional racing titles such as EA’s Need for Speed Most Wanted and Gameloft’s Asphalt8: Airborne. If first-person shooters are more your thing, you’ll be interested in Gameloft’s Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour; while sports fans should enjoy Sega’s Virtua Tennis Challenge; and action junkies will like Ubisoft’s Prince of Persia: The Shadow and the Flame. Samsung said it expects to add more games in 2014.

The GamePad works with devices running Android 4.1 or higher, though Samsung said it is optimized for its Galaxy lineup of phones running Android 4.3, including the Galaxy Note 3 ($307.96 at Amazon)(Opens in a new window), S4 , and Note II .

At this point, the device is only available in select European markets, but will go on sale in additional regions “in the coming weeks,” Samsung said.
