It’s never too early for spring cleaning, especially if you’re in the market for a new Xbox One.
Microsoft is offering a $100 in-store credit(Opens in a new window) to trade in “select” gaming consoles, including the Sony PlayStation 3.
Now through March 2, bring your PS3, Xbox 360 S or Xbox 360 E, and get $100 in Microsoft bucks, for use toward a new Xbox One.
But don’t forget to read the fine print: The offer is available in select Microsoft retail stores in the U.S. and Canada until March 2, or while supplies last. You cannot make the trade online. Only 31 states, plus three Canadian territories and Puerto Rico, are participating. Check the list online to find the store closest to you. Or calculate whether the cost of gas is worth a trip to the next state just to save $100 on a game console.
And don’t try to pawn off a broken machine: Eligible products must power on and be in fully functional, working condition, without damaged or missing parts. Microsoft will not accept devices that are password protected or don’t include original chargers and accessories.
Most notably, to receive maximum trade value$100consumers must purchase a new Xbox One ($200.00 at eBay)(Opens in a new window) at the same time. Prior orders or purchases do not count.
This deal may not be right for everyone. As PCMag sister site Geek.com pointed out(Opens in a new window), if the Xbox One were backwards compatible with the Xbox 360, then trading an old machine would make sense. But it’s not, so unless you don’t care about your amassed library of games, maybe it’s best to hold onto the 360 for now.
Redmond first introduced its next-generation console in May with a revamped controller and Kinect sensor in a $500 package. The “all-in-one entertainment system” arrived in November and comes with voice commands, Snap Mode for multitasking, and an updated channel guide.
Despite a higher price tag than the $400 Sony PlayStation 4 ($799.95 at Amazon)(Opens in a new window), which launched around the same time, the Xbox One managed to sell more than 3 million machines in 13 countries in 39 days.
