This summer, mobile gamers can hop into the nearest phone booth and transform into the Man of Steel with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment’s new Superman video game.
Warner Bros. on Thursday revealed the official game trailer for its upcoming Man of Steel mobile game, available for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, as well as Android smartphones and tablets later this month.
The 3D title is based on DC Comics’s iconic super-human, kryptonite-fearing character, and inspired by this summer’s Man of Steel film from WB and Legendary Pictures. Players can battle General Zod on the ground or in the air in the fast-paced mobile adventure.
But, dated graphics and movie-tie-in stigma highlighted by today’s trailer launch have already turned many off to the game, a full week before it hits stores.
User DeadWarder15 likened the game’s art to the 1996 game Super Mario 64, saying in a YouTube comment: “Come on WB you can do it much better! The new iOS devices are so powerful Just like Kal-EL. Please use their whole power!!”
Others complained that the game will be a waste of phone memory, or that in-app purchases will ruin the fun.
Game maker Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, meanwhile, is touting the title as a great move for the studio, and the hero franchise’s fans.
“The Man of Steel game allows Superman fans to extend the movie experience and game on-the-go with their favorite characters from the Man of Steel film,” Greg Ballard, senior vice president of WB’s mobile, social, and emerging platforms, said in a statement. “Phosphor Games delivered an addictive brawler that lets players feel the power of being a super hero.”
Phosphor Games Studios developed the Man of Steel romp with what WB called custom, console-quality cinematic sequences that drop players directly into Smallville, the Kent Farm, and other familiar settings. Gamers can share their scores with friends to gauge who really is the ultimate Man of Steel.
The game will be available on June 14 for $2.99 in the Apple iTunes Store, Google Play, and Amazon Appstore; an iPad-compatible HD version will cost $4.99.
