In the wake of some questionable content showing up via the PlayStation 4’s live-streaming feature, Twitch this week reiterated that it will not allow non-gaming content on the platform.
“FYI: We continue to moderate according to our Terms of Service. Non-gaming content is not allowed,” the company tweeted(Opens in a new window). “If using PS4 Playroom, the content must be about games or gaming and within our ToS.”
PS4 gamers can live-stream their gaming sessions with Twitch or Ustream. The Playroom feature comes pre-installed on the PS4 and lets users narrate live gameplay experiences streaming to Twitch or Ustream, among other things.
Not surprisingly, some gamers used the Twitch and Playroom features to broadcast inappropriate content. As noted by Game Revolution(Opens in a new window), one PS4 user – Darckobra – appeared with his wife on Twitch TV via the PS4. Both had quite a bit to drink, and the wife eventually passed out, at which point, the husband showed viewers her breast. Later, the stream cut out and when it returned, the wife was completely naked. Twitch later banned Darckobra’s account, Kotaku said(Opens in a new window).
On Reddit(Opens in a new window), one user said that Twitch was “actively banning users.”
Another couple had a more successful and less creepy experience on Twitch TV, creating a call-in show that attracted enough attention to warrant a call-in from Adam Boyes, head of publisher relations at Sony Computer Entertainment America. Shuhei Yoshida, the president of Worldwide Studios for Sony Computer Entertainment, also tweeted that he was watching, Venture Beat reported(Opens in a new window).
The show, which discussed modifying a DualShock 4 controller among other things, appears to be in line with Twitch’s rules. “Discussing gaming is gaming content. There are numerous such channels on Twitch, such as One More Game,” Twitch tweeted.
