Valve’s Steam platform on Sunday morning topped 7.19 million concurrent online users a first for the popular site, and a reminder that PC-based gaming is very much alive.
Based on the Steam & Game Stats page(Opens in a new window), the game-distribution service inched toward the 7 million mark during its annual autumn sale(Opens in a new window) (Nov. 27-Dec. 3), but didn’t surpass it until just after 9 a.m. Sunday. Less than two hours later, a whopping 7,190,333 players were signed on at once.
As of press time, Steam’s concurrent users reached 6.42 million even more than the 2012 record of 6.04 million, captured on Nov. 26.
In late October, Valve said Steam had more than 65 million active accounts. That means more than one out of every 10 members was using the service Sunday morning.
In an attempt to keep up with an expanding user base, the company recently revealed an entire system of hardware and software, currently in the beta stage. Optimized for living-room gaming, the new, open Linux-based SteamOS will run specifically on the Steam Machines that will be released by third-party providers like iBuyPower. Valve, however, is producing 300 prototype machines in the interim.
