Ubisoft’s long-anticipated Watch Dogs title is safe and sound after a prankster submitted a request to abandon the trademark.
Earlier this week, there were reports(Opens in a new window) that Ubisoft was giving up on the game after an “express abandonment” filing(Opens in a new window) was submitted to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) by Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot. Turns out, however, Guillemot did no such thing. The paperwork was actually “filed” by a bored hacker.
The game maker told PCMag that the company was working directly with the U.S. PTO to reinstate the Watch Dogs trademark, adding that “it will be active again in the coming days.”
According to a Feb. 5 filing(Opens in a new window), the trademark has in fact been reinstated, and a statement was signed by Guillemot declaring that he did not file the original abandonment request.
“Here, the circumstances are extraordinary. An unknown party who lacked authority executed the purported abandonment of the application,” the USPTO document said. “Although the request appears to have been sent by petitioner [Guillemot], petitioner declared that it did not submit the request and has every reason to believe that this filing was fraudulent.”
The trademark’s temporarily cancellation had no impact on the Watch Dogs game’s development, Ubisoft said.
First introduced in June 2012 at the E3 gaming expo, Watch Dogs was meant to launch on Nov. 19, in conjunction with the release of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles, but Ubisoft needed more time.
“From the beginning, we have adopted the attitude that we will not compromise on quality,” communications manager Gary Steinman wrote in an October blog post. “It became clear to us that we needed to take the extra time to polish and fine tune each detail so we can deliver a truly memorable and exceptional experience.”
The game, which follows protagonist Aiden Pearcea vigilante hacker/former criminal living in a futuristic Chicagois expected to hit shelves sometime this year. Based on a world where technology is run by a matrix of interconnected computers, or “smart cities,” Ubisoft reportedly turned to security firm Kaspersky Lab to make Pearce’s decisions more realistic.
