Microsoft’s Xbox Music service is now available on iOS and Android devices, while free streaming music can be accessed on the Web.
Until now, Xbox Music was only available on Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 devices, and the Xbox 360. In July, Microsoft launched Xbox Music for the Web, but only for Microsoft’s OS and without a free streaming option.
Now, on iOS(Opens in a new window) and Android(Opens in a new window), the Xbox Music app is free to download, but to access the Xbox Music catalogue, you’ll have to sign up for an Xbox Music subscription at $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year. But content will sync across all devices with Xbox Music installed – from your Xbox to your Windows 8 PC.
With the streaming option, meanwhile, music fans can enjoy on-demand access to 30 million songs globally for free on the Xbox Music Web player at music.xbox.com(Opens in a new window) or through the Xbox Music app on all Windows 8 tablets and PCs. Just sign in with the email address you use to sign in to Outlook, Windows 8, Skype, or Xbox – or sign up for a login via Xbox.com. Songs will stream for free and Microsoft is allowing for an unlimited number of playlists.
“Xbox Music now, more than ever, powers music experiences between Windows 8, Xbox, Windows Phone, and now iOS, Android and the Web,” Jerry Johnson, general manager of Xbox Music, said in a statement. “We’re also excited to connect artists with their fans on the most anticipated consumer product of the year when Xbox One launches Nov. 22.”
Xbox Music was unveiled at E3 2012 and made its official debut in October, shortly before the launch of Windows 8. The all-in-one music service lets music lovers dive into tunes as they see fit by streaming custom-created playlists as well as subscribing to and streaming songs.
Xbox Music leverages the cloud to integrate the music experience across all devices: phone, PC, TV, and tablet. It comes pre-installed as the default music player on all Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 devices, and is also available on the Xbox 360.
