Love is the Tinder trap. When we’re used to seamlessly having our dinner delivered and are uber sure that a car will be waiting for us the second we step out of a bar, why can’t love also be so effortlessly delivered to our doorsteps?

That’s the premise of Tinder, which has been making location-based matches since 2012. It says it’s responsible for a billion swipes a day by its own count, but how well it works depends on how well you gamify the gamification of love (or, let’s get real, hooking up). Swiping left or right while you take the train to work, sit through movie previews, or wait for a friend could possibly lead to you getting lucky, but if you’re a little less lazy, you can increase the likelihood that you’ll match with someone.

Like love, Tinder’s algorithms are a mystery. But there are some known factors that you can use to your advantage and find your one true love…or something like that. We put them together with a few tricks and new features that the app offers to help you find a match.

1. Appearances Are Everything

Appearances Are Everything

It’s not just potential love interests that are evaluating how you look.Tinder’s algorithm is having a peek, too. While Tinder isn’t scanning your photo to rate your attractiveness, it’s taking the swipes of its users and making a guess(Opens in a new window). So the better the photos you post, the more swipe rights you’ll get, and you’ll be shown more attractive people.

Clinton Kelly and Devyn Simone, hosts of Love at First Swipe, gave some advice to Extra on the perfect shots to share(Opens in a new window): “Action shot (showing you out doing something you love), social shot (showing you having fun with a friend or two of the same gender… you don’t want people thinking it’s your ex), full-body shot (something with good lighting showing your figure), and a headshot (great lighting is key for this one).”

Another option is Smart Photos, where Tinder will display what it considers your best profile photo. During a beta test, users saw up to a 12 percent increase in matches. To turn this on, navigate to Edit Profile and toggle “Smart Photos” to on.

2. Common Interests

Common Interests

Tinder is linked to your Facebook account, so change your Facebook profile to reflect the kind of person you want to attract. That’s not to say that you should pretend to be someone you’re not, but make a list of 50 of your favorite things (bands, sports, movies, teams, bars, museums, books, etc.) and then go to Facebook and like pages for all of them. This way the Tinder algorithm can get to work and find matches that share some of your passions.

3. Be a Selective Swiper

Be a Selective Swiper

The more people you swipe right on, the better chances you’ll match, right? No. At least not in the long term. If the swipe rights you dole out greatly outnumber the ones you get, then you become less desirable according to Tinder. This is a technique most often used by guys but even when employed by women, who tend to get more swipe rights than men, it can be unproductive(Opens in a new window) if not downright disastrous. So be honest with yourself and the people of Tinder and swipe right only if you mean it. It’s better for everyone.

4. Friend of a Friend

Friend of a Friend

Love, at least as Tinder defines it, is a popularity contest. The more friends you have on Facebook, the bigger the pool of potential matches you’ll have on Tinder. So expand your friends list, not only by adding people you’ve just met but by going through the Suggested Friends feature on Facebook and sending friend requests to people you’ve lost touch with or friends of friends that you’ve met a few times but never connected with on Facebook. Who knows, you might just find someone that way.

5. If You Like Like Someone

If You Like Like Someone

If you see someone you like, as in like like them, you can give them a Super Like. They’ll be notified of your extra interest and then can swipe right or left (sorry) on you. Tinder users get one Super Like a day and Tinder Plus users get five. Use them by either swiping up or clicking on the blue star on the profile.

6. On a Roll

On a Roll

Tinder recently freed your photos from Facebook. It used to be that you could only upload photos to the service from Facebook, making for some pretty awkward moments with your mom if your privacy settings weren’t on point. When you go to add a new photo you’ll now see the option to add from your camera roll or Facebook.

7. A Picture is Worth a Thousand Swipes

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Swipes

Well maybe not a thousand swipes, but you’re more likely to get someone’s interest if you share more of yourself on Tinder. And we don’t mean crotch shots. Connect your Instagram to Tinder to give a fuller sense of who you are. Go to Menu > View Profile > Edit > Connect Instagram. Even if your Instagram account is private, those on Tinder can see your most recent posts without this changing your privacy settings on Instagram.

Music fans can also connect their Tinder accounts to Spotify(Opens in a new window).

8. The One That Got Away

The One That Got Away

Regret is one of the worst emotions. If you’ve ever swiped past a person on Tinder accidentally or meant to but then had a twinge of regret, then spring for Tinder Plus. It gives you Rewind, which lets you go back one swipe. Tinder Plus is $9.99 a month ($19.95 if you’re over 30).

9. True Blue

True Blue

Not everyone is who they say they are, especially online. With a verified profile someone is less likely to feel that taking a chance on you is more like taking a risk. If you’re verified on Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook, you can send an email to [email protected] to try to do the same on Tinder (results not guaranteed).

10. International Love

International Love

Why limit your search for love to just your neighborhood? Grab Passport, a Tinder Plus feature. If you’re traveling, plan a rendezvous in a new city by chatting with the locals before you get there. Go to Settings > Discovery Preferences > Swiping In (on Android) or Location (on iOS) > Add a New Location. Then type in or search for a location, select it, and when a pin appears, tap the blue banner to begin swiping.

11. Group Date

Group Date

If you find safety in numbers, Tinder Social is designed to help you arrange group get-togethers. To use Tinder Social, start a group with the friends you’re planning to go out with, then swipe to match with other groups who are also hitting the town. You can chat with your group matches or see their status to find out what they’re up to and where everyone is going.
