Move over, Facebook. Another site is joining the double-digit club — Flickr.

The Yahoo-owned photo-sharing site launched on Feb. 10, 2004. A decade after hitting the scene, Flickr now boasts nearly 2 million groups, and its users share around a million photos every day, the company wrote in a blog post(Opens in a new window).

“It’s exciting for me to celebrate Flickr’s birthday!” co-founder Stewart Butterfield said in a statement. “When we dreamed this photo site 10 years ago, we couldn’t have imagined the impact it would have on digital photo sharing and the way it would connect people worldwide. I am proud of Flickr and excited for what’s ahead.”

Flickr boasted that it was the first “significant” online community for storing, organizing, tagging, and sharing digital photos. “Before Flickr, there was no widespread way to share your photos with friends, family and the wider public,” the company wrote.

These days, Flickr is facing stiff competition, with new photo-sharing services hitting the Web and app stores all the time. Under the purview of Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer, however, Flickr last May rolled out a major site redesign, ditching its old interface for photos that fill the screen, and upped the free storage limit to 1TB per user. The company has also been paying more attention to its apps, with a new version for Android and updates for iOS.
