Budget and Stocking Stuffer Items

Scroll Trellis

If you want to grow vines up a pole or post, or in a narrow space on a wall, then the Scroll Trellis is the perfect solution. It’s durable, easy to install and vines quickly scramble up it to cover both the trellis and the underlying structure.

Stretch Tie

Part twist tie, part stretchy plastic, this nifty little fastener holds vines and leafy stems in place without hurting them. As the plant grows and the stem gets thicker, the Stretch Tie does exactly what the name suggests – it stretches to accommodate the growing plant. This unique seed sowing aid is well-designed, easy to use, and comes with plenty of helpful information to make gardening simple. From square foot gardening to teaching kids the joys of planting, it’s a great tool for getting started with a well-planned garden.

Allsop Premium Grow Stake

These stakes have so many features, you’ll never go back to plain bamboo stakes. And as we mentioned in the video, we loved them so much we went out and bought six more!

Not very glamorous, but something we use constantly in our garden. Monica uses it for everything from capturing water during a rainstorm to carrying garden debris and mixing her own potting mix.

Like a hori-hori or soil knife on steroids. We use this for so many gardening tasks, from opening bags of compost to prying up rocks and paving stones, planting bulbs, dividing plants, cutting roots, and so much more.

ARS HP-130DX 7-Inch Ideal Light Pruner / Pocket Secateur, Colors Vary

If you’re looking for a light-duty pruner, then this is a terrific choice. It’s definitely a cut above other pruners on the market, including the ones you’re probably most familiar with. For everyday pruning and deadheading, these can’t be beat, although if you have large hands you may find that they’re too small.

ARS Folding Saw

Jack has tested a LOT of pruning saws, and this is his favorite folding saw. It’s ultra-sharp, comfortable to hold, folds easily and gets the job done quickly.

These are Monica’s all-time favorite pruners. With a rolling handle (to minimize fatigue), razor sharp cutting blade (chrome coated, marquenched, high carbon steel!), squeeze-to-open blade lock, and a cushioning spring, they’ve been her go-to for over 6 years.

Melnor Digital Watering Timer

If you’re looking for an irrigation timer that attaches to the spigot and has FOUR zones, then look no further. It’s easy to program and has an optional moisture sensor that stops the watering cycle if the ground is moist enough. With this and a self-watering planter, your garden can almost grow itself!

Pike’s Original Maine Garden Hod

A very handy, well-built basket for gathering and washing edibles and flowers from the garden. It’s made in the USA from local woods and food-grade PVC-coated wire mesh. There are other hods available now (and they look very similar) but this is the original that Monica has been using for almost 10 years now – and it’s still in perfect condition.

WORX Sweeper/Blower

OK, so maybe this isn’t exactly a budget item but we promise that once you use it you’ll never go back to just using a broom to clean debris, dust, and dirt! We use ours almost daily.

Potlifter – This handy strap and handle system makes lifting heavy and unwieldy objects (like pots, rocks, and firewood) so much easier.

Digz Gardening Gloves

Terrific for light- to medium-duty gardening tasks. They’re comfortable, flexible and breathable, with great dexterity, extra padding in all the right places, and a snug, adjustable wrist closure that keeps dirt out. These everyday use gardening gloves for under $10 make a great stocking stuffer.

Women’s Bionic ReliefGrip Gardening Gloves

If you’re looking for one glove that can do almost everything, you can’t go wrong with the Bionic ReliefGrip gardening glove. It has some unique features that make it a good choice not only for the typical gardener, but also for those of us with arthritic fingers.

Men’s Bionic Tough Pro Gloves

This is one tough pair of gloves! They stood up well to everything we could throw at them, all while remaining supremely comfortable. The ergonomic design, supple goatskin leather, silicon fingertips and Lycra flex zones all make for a terrific pair of gardening gloves. Sorry ladies, these are made for men.

Bear Wallow Rose Gauntlets

These elbow-long gloves are practically bullet-proof. They protect your hands and arms from thorns of all kinds, even the long spines on cactus! Monica swears by these comfortable goatskin and split cowhide gloves – and won’t go anywhere near a cactus without them!

Splurge Items – Because We All Deserve Something Special Now & Then!

Yard Force Pressure Washer

A beast of a machine packed in a small, easy to use unit. It has plenty of power to clean just about everything, especially with the included turbo nozzle. It’s simple to set up and lightweight enough to be easily lifted and moved with the folding handle. Monica won’t touch the full-sized units but she sure puts this compact pressure washer to good use!

Haws Watering Can

The creme de la creme of watering cans. It may not be something you’d splurge on for yourself (although Monica did many years ago!) but any gardener would LOVE to have one of these. The replacable brass rose puts out a gentle stream of water, the two handles let you perfectly balance the can as you water, and it’s built to last a lifetime.

Greenstalk Vertical Garden

Only have a small space but want to grow a ton of veggies or flowers? That’s no problem with this set of stacked containers! Just water from the top (the ingenious design ensures that all 5 layers get adequately watered) and watch your plants grow. We grow 30 hot pepper plants in this every year and get a bumper crop.

Watex Urban Farming Green Wall Kit

Create a green wall in minutes. It’s simple to install, gives you multiple design options, and the integrated irrigation system keeps plants nicely watered with minimal effort on your part (even through the extreme heat of a Tucson summer!). It’s the best vertical garden system we’ve used to date.

Crescent Garden Dot TruDrop Indoor/Outdoor Planter, Self-Watering Plant Pot, 20 Inches, (Ash)

Can you imagine only watering your plants in containers every two months? We didn’t believe it was possible but with these incredible self-watering planters, we can go anywhere from two weeks (in the heat of a Tucson summer) to two months (in fall) between waterings! Available in various sizes and styles.

AeroGarden, Black Bounty, garden

Garden year-round with this wi-fi enabled hydroponic kit. Sure, the wifi connectivity may be a bit over the top (although Jack loves checking in on the AeroGarden on his iPhone!), but it’s also available without that. And yes, the herbs really do grow as lushly as shown in the photo – we’re practically overwhelmed with basil, dill, and parsley.

Seeds

We’ve reviewed a ton of wonderful gardening books that would make a terrific gift for gardeners of all kinds.

And don’t forget seed packets – it’s the perfect stocking stuffer. There are so many companies to choose from but our personal favorites are Renee’s Garden Seeds, Botanical Interests and Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds.
