Lytro on Wednesday launched an iOS app that lets users view and share photos snapped with a Lytro camera on the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

The app can communicate with the Lytro camera, though users will have to update their camera to add wireless capabilities. Once installed, however, pull out your iPhone or iPad and tap into your Lytro photos via Wi-Fi or cellular.

Photos can be shared via Twitter and Facebook, or saved as animated GIFs that can be emailed or texted to friends and family.

“Lytro Mobile makes it even easier to share light field pictures and lets people experience the benefits of light field technology with a device that never leaves their side,” Jason Rosenthal, CEO of Lytro, said in a statement. “As the first to bring light field photography to consumers, we believe there is vast potential to this technology, and Lytro Mobile is the next step in building this category.”

Even if you don’t have a Lytro camera, you can download the app and see recently posted Lytro images in the stream, as well as search for people by username.

The Lytro captures images that you can focus after you’ve tripped the shutter. It made its debut in 2011 and hit retail stores the following year.

In December, Lytro released new filters, as well as Perspective Shift, which allowed photographers to interactively change the point of view in an image that had already been taken, creating a “living picture.”

The iOS app is available now in the App Store(Opens in a new window). It will work on the iPhone 3GS and up, fourth-gen iPod touch and up, and iPad, provided they are running iOS 6.1 or later.
