Periscope is taking new steps to shut down abusive trolls.

The Twitter-owned live-streaming app on Tuesday unveiled a new moderation system that lets viewers report and vote on comments they consider to be spam or abuse.

Here’s how it works: While watching a broadcast, viewers can now report offensive comments and, after doing so, will no longer see messages from that commenter for the remainder of the stream. When someone reports a comment, the system will randomly select a few viewers to vote on whether they think it’s spammy, abusive, or looks okay.

If the majority of votes indicate that the comment is indeed spam or abuse, the offending commenter will be put on time out — meaning the system will temporarily disable their ability to chat during the broadcast.

Periscope said the entire process should take just a matter of seconds.

“We’ve designed this system to be very lightweight,” the team wrote.

If, for whatever reason, you don’t like the new system, you don’t have to participate. Broadcasters have the option to prevent their streams from being moderated and viewers can opt out of voting from the Settings menu. You can, of course, still block and remove individual people from your broadcasts and restrict comments to people you know.

“There are no silver bullets, but we’re committed to developing tools to keep Periscope a safe and open place for people to connect in real-time,” the team wrote. “We look forward to working closely with you and everyone else in the community to improve comment moderation.”

The new system comes after Twitter, along with Facebook, Google, and Microsoft this week signed an EU code of conduct, promising to wipe illegal hate speech from their sites in less than 24 hours.
