Rdio today opened its Vdio service to all, dropping the requirement that users have an Rdio Unlimited subscription to tap into the movies and TV shows on Vdio.
“Grab some popcorn and scroll through our Spotlight or some Sets to discover something new to watch now,” Rdio said in a blog post(Opens in a new window).
Vdio is currently available in the U.S. and U.K. on the Web(Opens in a new window) and for the iPad(Opens in a new window).
Rdio launched Vdio back in April, making it available to Rdio Unlimited subscribers, who got a $25 credit to explore the Vdio lineup. Rdio also extended the same offer to anyone who subscribed to the $9.99 per month Rdio Unlimited over the past 60 days.
Vdio has “everything from the newest releases to cult classics and a whole lot in between from the major studios and networks,” Rdio said in a blog post(Opens in a new window) at the time.
The Vdio landing page currently features movies like Django Unchained and Oz the Great and Powerful and TV shows like Parks and Recreation and Modern Family.
In April, Rdio said movies will generally cost between $3.99-$4.99 to rent, or $14.99-$19.99 to buy. For TV, episodes will be $2.99-$3.99. Previews of movies and TV shows will be available for free.
When I tried to access Vdio this afternoon using my Facebook account, I got an alert that said it was only available in the U.S. and U.K. and was asked to enter my email address to receive notification when it was live. But when I opted to sign up with an email address, I quickly gained access.
Reports of Vdio first emerged in Oct. 2011. At the time, vdio.com produced a message that said the service was only available in the U.K.
