The days of automatically uploading your photos to Flickr for free are over.
Yahoo-owned Flickr announced(Opens in a new window) on Tuesday that customers who want the desktop Auto-Uploadr function for Flickr will now need to upgrade to the company’s Pro platform, which costs $50 per year. The feature was previously available for free; it rolled out last year.
“This feature lets you effortlessly upload all of your photos from wherever they are being stored, while making them accessible from any device. If you are already a Pro member, you won’t see any changes to your existing subscription,” Flickr said.
To soften the blow, Flickr is offering a limited-time, 30 percent discount(Opens in a new window) for those who want to upgrade to Flickr Pro, or $35 for the year. In addition to the Auto-Uploadr function, Flickr Pro users get ad-free browsing of photos, “advanced stats” on who views photos, and more.
Flickr is trying to find its way in what is an increasingly crowded world of cloud-based storage and photo sharing, from Instagram to Google Photos.
The news comes as parent company Yahoo is considering(Opens in a new window) how to structure its business going forward.
