Instagram plans to soothe users’ FOMO (fear of missing out) with a new algorithm that will re-order posts to highlight images you’re most likely to care about.

Folks currently scroll through a timeline of pictures in chronological order—that is, the most recent snapshot at the top, leading down a sequential rabbit hole. But people on average miss 70 percent of their feed, according to Instagram, due to either general laziness or the social network’s massive volume of pictures and clips uploaded every day.

The order of photos and videos in your feed will be based on the likelihood you’ll be interested in the content, your relationship with the person posting and the timeliness of the post,” the company said in a blog post(Opens in a new window). “As we begin, we’re focusing on optimizing the order — all the posts will still be there, just in a different order.

“If your favorite musician shares a video from last night’s concert, it will be waiting for you when you wake up, no matter how many accounts you follow or what time zone you live in,” the blog said. “And when your best friend posts a photo of her new puppy, you won’t miss it.”

The news comes about a month after Twitter unveiled its algorithmic timeline to show users the best tweets from people they follow. Twitter’s solution, however, is opt in. It’s unclear if Instagram will allow people to keep their existing timelines.

Similarly, Facebook last year let users pick which friends and Pages they see at the top of their News Feed.
