If you’re a student who wants to watch YouTube without adverts, or enjoy listening to music all day, Google has some good news for you. The subscription costs of YouTube Premium and YouTube Music Premium are dropping significantly(Opens in a new window) as long as you qualify for student status.
YouTube Premium(Opens in a new window) offers YouTube video streaming without the adverts, but also exclusive original content, offline playback (for up to 30 days), and background playback on mobile devices. It used to be called YouTube Red until Google decided to rebrand it as YouTube Premium in June this year. It costs $11.99 per month, but students can now sign up for just $6.99 per month.
YouTube Premium Music is a similar deal. A paid subscription removes the adverts, keeps music playing when you lock your phone or push the app into the background, and allows you to download your favorite songs for offline listening. It costs $9.99 per month normally, but students can sign up for $4.99(Opens in a new window).
YouTube Premium is a better deal because it includes all the benefits of the slightly cheaper YouTube Music Premium while adding videos to the ad-free mix. And if that wasn’t good enough, TechCrunch reports(Opens in a new window) that any student signing up for YouTube Premium before Jan. 31, 2019 will only pay $5.99 per month(Opens in a new window) as long as they remain a student or for a maximum period of four years, whichever happens first.
By cutting the price so significantly, Google is clearly hoping to hook new subscribers while they are young and get them used to enjoying content without limits or adverts. By doing so, they’ll be more inclined to continue subscribing in future when they have more disposable cash as (hopefully) employed individuals who still hate adverts.
