The Nest Protect smoke alarm has officially been recalled after the company found a glitch that caused the devices to turn off with the wave of a hand.

The recall includes all 440,000 Nest Protect Smoke + CO alarms, according to a notice(Opens in a new window) from the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

At issue is the Nest Protect’s Wave function, which allows users to turn off the alarm with a wave of their hand. Unfortunately, it might also prevent the alarm from going off in the event of an actual emergency.

“Activity near the product during a fire can prevent the alarm from immediately sounding when the Nest Wave feature is enabled,” the commission found.

At this point, Nest Labs has received no reports of incidents, injuries, or property damage because of the problem, the CPSC said.

But while the word recall might suggest that owners have swap their Protect devices for a new one, they actually just need to download an update that disables the Wave function.

Those who have their Protect connected to a home Wi-Fi network likely already received the update; they can check by going to Nest Sense on their Nest account mobile or Web application to make sure the button for Nest Wave is set to “off” and grayed out.

Those with Protect gadgets not connected to the Web and linked to a Nest account “should immediately do so,” the CPSC said. They will then receive the update.

Nest Labs acknowledged the problem and stopped selling the Protect in early April. It is still listed as unavailable on the Nest website, though a spokesman said “we’ll be bringing Nest Protect back on the market soon.”

“Nothing else has changed since our initial announcement last month,” the company said.

“Once we have a solution that ensures Nest Wave works as intended, we will update our software to turn this feature back on,” Nest Labs CEO Tony Fadell said last month. “This will only happen after extensive testing and once we have received approval from safety agencies in the U.S., Canada and U.K. We expect this to take at least two or three months and we’ll continue to update you as we have more information.”
