“Hey, Nest. I’m freezing. Turn the heat up.”
Were it only so easy to get your smart thermostat to obey your verbal complaints and adjust your home’s temperature to something more to your liking. We suspect that thermostat would get a bit of a tongue-lashing around the holiday season. At least, during all those times you have to scoot across your cold, hardwood floor in the morning.
Well the Nest Learning Thermostat is now more ready to hear your grousing than ever before. According to Android Police(Opens in a new window), Google has unlocked voice commands for the smart thermostat. Assuming you start your verbal tirade with “OK Google” on supported devices, then you can supplement your sentence with commands like “turn the thermostat” or “set nest at,” among a ton of other potential things to say.
Of course, the system isn’t going to work if you stand next to your thermostat and yell at it (though, if you do, please take a YouTube video). In actuality, you’ll be doing the barking at a Google Now-equipped smartphone, tablet, or computer, which will translate your commands into actions for your Nest.
But first, you have to ensure that Google and Nest are talking to one another, which you can set up via the Google Works with Nest(Opens in a new window) page. The setup process is fairly simple: log into your Google and Nest accounts, and then link the two together.
From there, you’ll be ready to go if you’re using an Android device, as it likely has Google Now pre-installed. If not, or if you’re running an iOS device, you’ll want to download the Google app from your device’s app store. If you’re on your computer or laptop, be sure to grab the latest version of Google’s Chrome browser. (And, of course, your desktop PC will need to have some kind of microphone.)
If you’re not quite sure what to say to your Nest, then Google has a giant list of voice commands(Opens in a new window) that you can (memorize and) try out. That is, of course, assuming that Google hasn’t already decided that you need more heating or cooling anyway.
“The Google app can automatically pre-heat or cool your home by using your phone’s location. It will recognize that you’re on your way home, and estimate when you’ll arrive. Then it tells your Nest Thermostat to start heating or cooling so that your home is at the right temperature when you open the door. You’ll see a Now card telling you that Nest is getting ready for your arrival,” reads Google’s description(Opens in a new window).
