Amazon is seeking Alexa skills for kids, and is ready to shell out some serious cash to developers who can deliver.

The online retail giant launched a new hackathon offering $250,000 in prizes for the best kid-themed skills for its voice assistant. The grand prize winner will take home $25,000 while 20 finalists will walk away with $5,000 each.

Amazon is looking for skills that will educate, entertain, and engage kids under the age of 13. The company will be judging skills based on their creativity and originality, ease-of use, and potential impact on kids.

“Inspire wonder. Foster kids’ creative problem-solving skills. Cheer them on for a job well done,” Amazon encouraged. “Bring them into the action with interactive experiences. Make it fun. Make them laugh. Make a strong first impression. Keep their interest. Make it useful so they want to keep coming back.”

The contest is open to anyone of legal age in their country of residence, though 13- to 17-year-olds in the US and Canada can also take part with parental consent. Amazon will also be offering bonus prizes with $5,000 to $10,000 payouts for the best skill by a high school student, university student, the best Echo Show ($229.99 at Amazon)(Opens in a new window) skill, and the best educational skill.

Developers can submit their skills now through Jan. 10 at 5pm ET. Judging will take place in February and the winners will be announced at the end of that month. The new Amazon contest comes after Google earlier this week launched more than 50 new games, activities, and stories, specifically designed for families and kids on its rival voice assistant.

Meanwhile, Amazon earlier this month announced that parents can now add 13- to 17-year-olds their account, giving teens the freedom to shop and stream content on their own. Once you add a teen to your Amazon account, you can approve or deny every order they place, or set pre-approved spending limits.
