LAS VEGAS— Most wearables you can easily see. Fitbits and Apple Watches are flashy, wrist-worn devices that track steps, heart rate, calories burned, and how well you sleep. But how accurate is this information? Sometimes it’s hard to gauge, but the Beddit Smart, a wearable worn by your mattress, is here to fix that.
The Beddit Smart looks like a white belt that wraps around your mattress to monitor your sleeping habits and send the info to a smartphone app. Over time, the app learns when you go to bed, when you wake up, and how well you sleep. It culminates in a SleepScore from 0 to 100; the higher the better, though 75 points and up is considered a good night’s rest. The SleepScore is a summary of several sleep metrics, including how much you toss and turn, how efficient you’re sleeping, and how much you’re getting out of bed at night.
The Beddit Smart uses ballistocardiography, the measurement of cardiac activity from the platform supporting you, i.e. your mattress. As it learns your sleeping habits, the Beddit will wake you with its smart alarm function at the optimal time to feel fresh, and will monitor how well you actually slept. It also measures your heart rate and respiration—snoring—so you can get a clearer picture of how well you sleep, something a wrist-worn tracker won’t do. The ballistocardiography used in Beddit—while a mouthful—is developed with the Helsinki Sleep Clinic, making it slightly more legit than other technologies that claim to simply be “proprietary.”
The Beddit will pair well with any phone running iOS or Android using Bluetooth. It plays especially well with an Apple Watch ($300.00 at eBay)(Opens in a new window) , which will display your SleepScore when you wake up. With so many wearables in the market now vying for eyeballs, frankly, we’re happy to see one that works behind the scenes.
The Beddit Smart retails for $149.99, and is available now.
