LAS VEGAS—Apple doesn’t attend CES, but that didn’t stop iDevices from showing off the Switch, the first smart plug compatible with Cupertino’s HomeKit. I got a chance to check out the hardware, as well as some shots of the what the app should look like when it hits store shelves.
Somewhat reminiscent of the Belkin WeMo Insight Switch, the iDevices Switch adds a color-changing night light to the mix, which is a nice touch. Through a free app on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you can use the Switch to control, monitor, and schedule devices around the house like fans, humidifiers, lamps, and stereos.
The Switch plugs directly into an electrical outlet. (It only takes up one outlet, which is important.) Thanks to HomeKit, you don’t need an external hub. The Switch will work right out of the box by connecting to your home Wi-Fi network through the app. And although we still don’t know everything about HomeKit, the Switch should be able to work in tandem with other HomeKit devices, allowing you to do things like turn the lights on or off, lock the doors, and set the thermostat, all in one motion (provided you have compatible devices).
As you can see in the slideshow, the iDevices app should be relatively straightforward and simple to use. The Switch can be triggered at any point you’d like from a connected device, or programmed to remember recurring events, so it will always turn the lights off at the same time, for instance.
The Switch itself features a stackable design with the outlet on one side, and a physical Power button on the other. It looks very much like an Apple product. I especially like the aforementioned night light on the front. You can customize the color of the light through the app, which gives you virtually limitless options.
For $49.99, the Switch looks like it could give other smart plugs a run for their money, thanks to its sleek design and HomeKit compatibility. Of course, we’re also still waiting on HomeKit to see just how useful it can be. And we’ll undoubtedly see more HomeKit-compatible smart plugs appear before then, so it’ll be interesting to see how they all set themselves apart.
