LAS VEGAS—LG kicked CES off with a bang this year, with one of the first press conferences Monday morning. We’ve already taken a look at the G Flex 2, but the company also provided an overview of other products to look forward to in 2015, including everything from some beautiful new OLED TVs to a crazy new washing machine that basically has another washing machine inside of it.
The press conference started with an overview of the company’s plans to increase its presence among the Internet of Things. LG wants to create an entire ecosystem of products that work together, including home automation, smart cars, and a new wellness platform. The company also wants to add WebOS to the mix, making it interoperable with other products in the home. WebOS will be seeing some improvements this year, including an improved (read: simpler) user interface, as well as the ability to boot up 60 percent faster.
LG also spent a good deal of time talking up its new OLED TV line, along with hopes of making it the new standard in home television. The company introduced seven new OLED screens—including curved, flexible, and flat models—all of which incorporate LG’s proprietary WRGB technology. The company claims that this pixel structure adds a white sub pixel, which makes for more life-like colors. We’ll be taking a closer look at those later in the show.
Of course, 4K OLED TVs probably aren’t really going to take off until there is more content available, so LG brought Netflix chief streaming officer Greg Peters on the stage to announce that HDR is coming to Netflix and LG TVs this year, along with a new Netflix Recommended TV program, which allows Netflix to suggest recommended TVs to users.
LG also announced the G Flex 2. You can check out our hands on with it here, but it’s basically an upgraded, more elegant version of the G Flex smartphone we saw last year. Some of the enhancements seem useful, like an improved “self-healing” back and some pretty powerful silicon inside. But it’s a curved phablet, which means it isn’t going to be for everyone.
Perhaps the coolest thing LG showed, however, is its new Twin Wash washing machine, which is essentially a washing machine within a washing machine. It sounds confusing, but take a look at the photos in the slideshow. There’s space for a full-size load on top, and a smaller, pull-out drawer on the bottom allows you to wash two loads simultaneously. It’s a fairly simple idea, and it’s basically my mom’s dream (and mine when I’m visiting with a big bag of laundry). LG’s latest appliances also include Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity, which allows them to do things like help let you know when something is ready.
There were other announcements, too, like LG Music Flow, which is a Sonos-like audio system that allows you to build a network of speakers throughout your home that can be controlled via mobile app. The cool thing here is that this setup includes a battery-powered speaker, as well as the ability to make music follow you from room to room.
LG also mentioned new Blu-ray players, soundbars, and a ton of other new devices, but it didn’t show them all onstage. We’ll take a closer look at many of the new products as we get to see them up close on the show floor, so check back soon to see more.
