Nest has some new app features for its Nest Cam Indoor and new Nest Cam Outdoor ($179.99 at Amazon)(Opens in a new window) , including free three-hour video archiving for all users, time-lapse video playback, and smart highlights using new video analysis algorithms on both home security cameras.
Sightline is the newest feature added to the Nest app. It compiles all video history recorded by a Nest Cam into a single time lapse file that can be browsed at will, similar to the Logi Circle’s daily summary feature that displays the past 24 hours seen by the camera as a 30-second clip. The feature is available to all Nest Aware subscribers starting today.
Sightline integrates new video analysis features into Nest Cam storage, using movement detection and person recognition to determine what to highlight. According to Nest, Sightline monitors video and sound to identify whether it’s a person in the frame or some other source of movement, like wind rustling a tree. These activities are marked as such, and highlighted in the Nest app with a photo that zooms in on the source of the movement.
While Sightline is intended for Nest Aware service subscribers, Nest announced a small boon for Nest Cam users who don’t use the service. All Nest Cam users can access a three-hour video history with Sightline, providing a short period of time for recorded activity to be checked regardless of subscription.
Today also marks the commercial ship date for the Nest Outdoor Cam, a rugged, weatherproof version of the Nest Cam (now Nest Cam Indoor ($154.99 at Amazon)(Opens in a new window) ) announced a few months ago; it’s also available in stores.
Finally, Nest unveiled three new colors for its Nest Learning Thermostat. The thermostat is already available with a stainless steel body, but now white, black, and copper versions provide homeowners with additional choices to complement their decor. The black and copper versions are metallurgically interesting; the black coating is a carbon material that incorporates silicon and titanium and, according to Nest, is as hard as diamond. The copper coating is forged with steel to increase durability.
All three new thermostat colors are available directly through Nest now, and will be available at retail in the coming weeks.
