Netgear today revealed the Arlo Pro HD wireless camera(Opens in a new window), which features quick-charge rechargeable batteries and two-way audio.
The weatherproof device can be placed anywhere—on the porch or in the baby’s room. It’s powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, but can also be plugged into an outlet via the included AC adapter. Keep tabs on home and family via an ultra-wide, 130-degree lens; RGP-IR technology even means it can see in the dark.
An onboard infrared motion sensor identifies movement up to 23 feet away, and will send mobile alerts to a connected smartphone when activity is detected. Later this year, Netgear will roll out smart object recognition, which can distinguish between people, pets, and other objects.
Plus, new two-way talk means folks can hear the kids playing in the yard or shout at intruders and thieves. Arlo Pro also includes an extremely loud siren (100-plus decibels), meant to alert the homeowner or scare off trespassers.
From the Arlo mobile app—now accessible via Apple TV ($144.00 at Amazon)(Opens in a new window) —you can arm or disarm cameras, based on schedule and location. The smart accessory might, for example, know when you’re expected to arrive home from work and automatically shut off the motion-detection alarm.
Arlo’s free cloud service, meanwhile, stores motion- and audio-triggered videos for seven days. Consumers can connect up to five wireless cams without paying monthly subscription fees. Optional service plans(Opens in a new window) are available, as well.
The Arlo Pro Systems are available for pre-order now via Best Buy(Opens in a new window) starting at $249.99; add-on cameras cost $189.99 each. Existing owners of the Arlo system can add the new Pro cameras to their base station. A charging station(Opens in a new window) ($59.99), rechargeable battery(Opens in a new window) ($49.99), and silicon skins(Opens in a new window) (three for $24.99) are sold separately.
