The Best Kitchen Tech at IFA 2016

While we spend most of our time at IFA looking at PCs and phones, the giant European trade show has been a hub for kitchen equipment for decades. There are huge halls consisting mostly of cooktops, and others where busy chefs run juicers eight hours a day, giving out samples to the masses.

The big trend this year is clearly programmability: several high-end kitchen equipment makers showed app-connected cooktops and ovens that work with tablets to auto-set themselves for various foods. We also found competing smart refrigerators, smart cooktops, and even a garden that goes right in your kitchen.

So take a break from all the phones and wearables, and check out the nine coolest kitchen gadgets we found at the show. For more, see The Best Gadgets at IFA 2016.

1. Bosch PerfectCook Cooktop

Bosch PerfectCook Cooktop

Tablet-connected, sensor-laden cooktops are a big thing at this year’s IFA. Bosch’s version can monitor the heat of your pans and count the time on individual burners, tuning everything based on a recipe in a tablet app.

2. DigitalStrom/Tielsa Alexa-Connected Faucet

DigitalStrom/Tielsa Alexa-Connected Faucet

DigitalStrom is a smart home integration company we first met last year, when it had a coffee machine that would make you a cup when you smiled at it. The company is back with an actual retail product this time. Working with Tielsa, it’s connected kitchen faucets to Amazon’s Alexa service, so you can turn the water on and off with no hands, or rinse pasta by saying “Alexa, run cold water for ten seconds.”

3. Grundig In-Home Cultivator

Grundig In-Home Cultivator

No space for your own garden? Grundig’s prototype lets you grow large quantities of herbs at home. It’s about the size of a fridge, with a water tank at the bottom. It’ll light and grow various herbs and vegetables, with a little light turning green when they’re ready. Farm-to-table has never been closer to the table.

4. LG Smart InstaView Door-in-Door

LG Smart InstaView Door-in-Door

LG’s InstaView smart fridge slaps a gigantic Windows 10 tablet on the front, giving it access to the wide world of Windows 10 apps. Of course, it also has fridge-exclusive software, such as the ability to see what’s inside using your phone (helpful at the grocery store).

5. Panasonic Holochef

Panasonic Holochef

Panasonic’s concept kitchen includes a transparent screen at the end of the food prep surface where a holographic chef can give you cooking demonstrations as if he’s standing in the room with you.

6. Philips Innergizer Blender

Philips Innergizer Blender

Philips says this is the world’s most powerful blender, with a maximum speed of up to 45,000 RPM. That puts it above Blendtec and Vitamix levels, for sure. Yet it isn’t screamingly loud, thanks to its surrounding soundproof cage. The goal here is to create the smoothest smoothies known to humans, without the waste you get from juicers.

7. Samsung Family Hub

Samsung Family Hub

Samsung’s Family Hub smart fridge has a camera inside, which sounds silly: wouldn’t you just open the door? But you can use virtual labels to point out objects in the fridge and when you think they’ll go bad, letting you keep an eye on the freshness of your vegetables. That way you won’t waste food.

8. Severin Wurster

Severin Wurster

Sausages are very important to Germans. Severin’s Wurster, which we also saw at IFA last year, goes all in on the sausage innuendo, with the slogan “Moments of Men” and sauces like “Ladykiller.” Pop your sausage into the hole (yes, really) and five minutes later, it’ll be perfectly browned.

9. Trebs Pizza Gusto

Trebs Pizza Gusto

Popular in Europe but unknown in the US, this tabletop pizza oven is mostly notable for its look, and for the fact that you can bake up to eight tiny pizzas at a time. While most US pizza ovens are quite serious affairs, this turns pizza-making into a cute, entertaining family activity.
