Withings Home Is a Pint-Sized Security Guard

The market for connected home devices grows every day. Today, that expansion includes the sculptural-looking Withings Home security device.

The heart of the Withings Home is an HD camera with a 135-degree wide-angle zoom, night vision, two digital microphones, and a speaker. The Home detects motion and noise, can sense the presence of people, and switch on at the sound of a cry. If an event triggers the Home’s sensors, it will send a notification to smartphones, record the event, and store that video in the cloud.

Withings designed the Home to also measure temperature and humidity inside the home, as well as the presence of volatile organic chemicals. VOCs are given off by common household items such as furniture and carpeting and can have adverse health effects(Opens in a new window). “With Withings Home, we’re addressing a very critical part of the health and well-being puzzle that has not yet been served by a single device,” Cedric Hutchings, co-founder and CEO of Withings, said in a statement.

Withings said Home will integrate with Apple’s HomeKit, which will be available in iOS 8.

Home will sell for $219 and also be available for purchase on Withings.com and at select retailers.
