If Ashton Kutcher had it his way, Twitter would go back to the way it was years ago. Though his personal account(Opens in a new window) boasts more than 14 million followers, Kutcher said Thursday that his use of Twitter is waning because the service taken a nosedive as of late.
“The Twitter experience has changed for me, drastically,” Kutcher said on stage at CTIA in Las Vegas. “It used to be a personalized sharing experience. I think, for lack of a better verb, media f*cked it up. Media companies came in and pounced on it.”
The problem, according to the Two and a Half Men star? There’s just too much noise on Twitter these days.
“It’s companies selling things I don’t want. Companies and people constantly pitching crap,” he said.
But don’t get him wrong—Kutcher admits he’s guilty of doing the same thing. When his upcoming Steve Jobs biopic Jobs hits theaters, you better believe Kutcher will be promoting it on Twitter.
One of the things that’s hurt Twitter the most, according to Kutcher, has been the addition of the retweet button, which he says lets people mindlessly pass along tweets without adding any context. Kutcher said he still uses Twitter “a lot” but later added that his use of the service has become increasingly limited. At this point, he pretty much just uses it as an RSS feed.
But all hope isn’t lost for the popular social network in Kutcher’s eyes. The actor said he thinks Twitter founder Jack Dorsey and Co. are well aware of the issues they’re dealing with and will work out the kinks over time.
Twitter might be old news, but what is Kutcher into these days? When asked to name his favorite apps of the moment by moderator Julia Boorstin, Kutcher paused to take his phone out of his pocket to look at the home screen.
“Spotify I use for all my music, Flipboard I use for all my media consumption,” he said, citing two services he has invested in. On the social media front, Kutcher said he frequently uses Path and Couple, both of which he’s also backed.
Speaking of social networks, Kutcher said he’s still a big-time Facebook user.
“Facebook manages the whole social graph for me. All of my relationships. It used to be very intimate and now it’s more of a weak-tie platform, but it’s still very valuable,” he said.
