The Transformer tablet line is already well known, with several top scoring devices, both Windows and Android, like the Asus Transformer Book TX300C and the Asus Transformer Pad Infinity TF700. Now, Asus is releasing its latest Windows tablet hybrid, the Transformer Book T100.

First shown to developers last month at the Intel Developer Forum, the Transformer Book T100 is a detachable hybrid, functioning as tablet and laptop by way of a docking keyboard. The Transformer Book T100 is a compact 10-inch tablet that boasts Windows 8.1 and is available with either 32GB or 64GB of local storage.

The Transformer Book T100 is equipped with an Intel Atom Z3740 processor, one of Intel’s new fourth-generation Bay Trail processors, paired with 2GB of RAM. The tablet measures only 0.41-inch thick, and weighs 1.2 pounds alone (2.4 pounds with docking keyboard). The 10.1-inch display has basic 1,366-by-768 resolution, but has an IPS panel for sharper picture, richer colors, and wider viewing angles.

The Transformer also boasts Windows 8.1, the newly updated version of Microsoft’s touch-friendly operating system, which features improved transitions between desktop and the start screen, the return of the Start button, and more options for multitasking.

The tablet is outfitted with a micro USB port, micro HDMI, and Micro SD card reader, along with a headset jack. Wireless options include dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0. The docking keyboard offers a second, full-size USB 3.0 port, along with a chiclet keyboard and small multi-touch trackpad. Asus claims that the tablet’s 31Wh battery will offer up to 11 hours of casual usage, but unlike many detachable hybrids on the market, there is no secondary battery in the keyboard.

The new Transformer Book T100 will be available starting Oct. 21, with the 32GB model selling for $349, and the 64GB model for $399.
