Box is gearing up for a multi-million-dollar initial public offering(Opens in a new window) by releasing two new technologies and an updated API pricing scheme.
During its first Box Dev conference on Wednesday, the cloud storage company unveiled Box View and Metadata, both aimed at building a more developer-friendly platform.
“Every business in the world today is transitioning from legacy solutions to cloud services that help their workforce be more agile, collaborative and competitive,” Box CEO Aaron Levie said in a statement.
“This presents a significant market opportunity for entrepreneurs and developers to create a new generation of software and Box has the opportunity to be the platform that powers this ecosystem,” he said.
That power comes directly from the new Box View, which converts PDF and Office documents into easily embeddable HTML, allowing developers to build more immersive applications like custom document viewers.
Before this week’s rollout to the public, a handful of organizations, including Oracle, UberConference, Xero, and Zendesk, piloted the program—and were pleased with its ease of use.
“Box View is a great example of how you can take a feature from one cloud application and extend it to another with ease and elegance,” Zendesk CEO Mikkel Svane said.
Pricing varies by plan, though all Standard plan customers will receive up to 1,000 document conversions per month for free; add $250 each month for up to 2,500 document conversions. Those planning on more than 10,000 conversions per month can request further details about the Box View Enterprise plan.
Also helping to revolutionize the cloud development system is Box Content API service Metadata, which allows developers to attach customizable data to unstructured content. Now integrated into Box’s search function, developers and customers can quickly identify and locate stored content.
Levie also introduced new pricing plans for its APIs, marking the first time customers can purchase Box as a platform.
Users can chose from various pricing tiers for Box’s Content APIs: Build provides free access to the entire Box Content API up to 25,000 API Actions per month, while Scale costs $500 for every additional 25,000 API Actions each month.
Pricing for the Transform plan, meanwhile, is available on request, and geared toward the largest enterprise customers who require customized terms.
Early this year, Box launched an overhauled iOS app, promising a more intuitive user interface with a sidebar for comments. The app also boasts new preview capabilities for more than 100 file types, and comes with a redesigned OneCloud gallery of partner applications, plus a customized menu of recommended apps for each file.
