Heads up, developers. The latest release from Canonical — Ubuntu 15.04 — is now available(Opens in a new window) for download across the desktop, phone, cloud, and the Internet of things (IoT) ecosystem.

“Ubuntu 15.04 is the advanced developers’ favorite platform today, and presents a fully converged platform spanning cloud, device, and client,” Canonical wrote in a blog post(Opens in a new window) this week.

On the desktop, this release introduces some new tools for cloud and IoT development, as well as integrated desktop menus, and dashboard usability improvements. The old Ubuntu Developer Tools Centre has been renamed Ubuntu Make, and it now offers support for 14 new platforms, including Android NDK and Android Studio, IDEA, pycharm, webstorm, rubymine, phpstorm, eclipse, Firefox developer edition, and the Stencyl game development platform.

“Ubuntu Make provides a fresh, well-isolated development environment for every application so developers don’t have to worry about messing up their installation if they want to install pipy, npm, rubygem libraries,” Canonical said. “Ubuntu’s leadership in containers and containment enable fantastic developer experiences on modern workstations and laptops.”

Meanwhile, LibreOffice, Ubuntu’s free office suite, got a bump to version 4.4 offering a number of minor tweaks, including better change tracking in Writer, enhanced mail merge performance, and improved shapes that can now have fully formatted content with tables. Other additions include support for digitally signed PDF exports, and the ability to connect to Sharepoint and OneDrive.

Besides that, version 15.04 also introduces the first stable version of ‘Snappy’ Ubuntu Core, the smallest and most secure version of the Ubuntu that now powers everything from drones and robots to network switches and IoT home hubs.

“This is an amazing platform for the new generation of cloud and device developers” Dustin Kirkland, product manager for Ubuntu Core, said in a statement. “The combination of an open platform with an app store that works across a very wide range of devices, from tiny embedded boards to high end switches and routers, has stimulated a rush of creativity in the maker and entrepreneur communities.”

As for phones, Ubuntu said that version 15.04 is the base for its smartphone operating system currently shipping on the BQ Aquaris E4.5 and headed to Meizu MX4 “in due course.” The latest updates will be delivered over the air in the “coming weeks,” Canonical said.

For the uninitiated, Ubuntu is an open-source platform that runs on everything from smartphones and tablets to the PC, servers, and the cloud. Since 2008, Ubuntu has been pre-installed on some 40 million PCs worldwide.

“Ubuntu preloaded devices are growing in popularity in regions such as EMEA, India, South East Asia and Latin America, as well as being the high-end developer platform of choice in the West, with incredible machines such as the Nvidia DevBox for advanced machine learning and visualization engineering,” Canonical said.
