Comodo Programs Manager (for PC) Review

[ad_1]

Comodo makes a number of PC tools, among them the company’s free Programs Manager for the tinkerer who longs for clean software removal. This uninstall utility lets Windows PC users uninstall and update software, as well as rid their machines of the broken and failed uninstalls that can muddy registries and hard drives. Overall, Comodo Programs Manager works, but it suffers from occasional lockups and missing features that are found in the Editors’ Choice IObit Uninstaller 5, which is also free.

The Comodo Experience
Windows’s integrated software uninstaller lets you remove just one program at a time, but Comodo Programs Manager (like IObit Uninstaller) gives you the option to select multiple applications at once. You still have to approve the program deletions between the individual uninstalls, but the overall software uninstall process is much faster than what Windows offers by default.

Like IObit Uninstaller 5, Comodo Programs Manager leverages real-time software monitoring that keeps an eye on applications to prevent programs from leaving behind file bits when they’re uninstalled. I removed Digsby, iTunes, and other apps from a Windows 7-powered laptop with ease. Unike IObit Uninstaller 5, Comodo Programs Manager hasn’t been updated to be fully compatible with the Windows 10 ($139.00 at Microsoft Store)(Opens in a new window) , so it may not run at peak performance on Microsoft’s latest operating system.

Comodo also recognized that iCloud Control Panel (iCloud’s management software) left behind some bits and prompted me to manually delete them—I was happy to see that Comodo caught them. On the other hand, Comodo Programs Manager lacks IObit’s winning feature: the ability to uninstall browser toolbars and plug-ins. That’s a wonderfully useful feature for kicking unwanted add-ons to the curb.

Comodo Programs Manager

Some Good Points, Some Bad Points
Comodo Programs Manager occasionally froze during my tests, forcing me to close out and then reopen the application. The lockups weren’t persistent, but they were common enough to be worth mentioning. I didn’t experience this issue testing IObit Uninstaller. Comodo Program Manager also lacks a file shredder, a feature that makes deleted files unrecoverable, and PC tune-up utilities. Those extras aren’t needed to uninstall software, but they’re certainly nice to have. IObit Uninstaller 5, Comodo Programs Manager’s free competitor, has file shredding capabilities. The $59.99 Editors’ Choice award-winner Ashampoo Uninstaller 6 also has a file shredder.

Finally, Comodo Programs Manager’s Drivers and Services section lets you uninstall drivers, too. This sounds promising, but most of the names lack descriptions, so you should tread lightly in removing them unless you know (or research) what they are first. I understood that an Nvidia driver update was for my PC’s graphics card, but when I saw a very vague Beep update, I scratched my head and left it in place. After all, a missing driver can cripple an application. It’s worth noting, however, that you can back up the apps and drivers you install, so that you can recover them if a problem arises.

Should You Download Comodo Programs Manager?
Comodo Programs Manager lets you manage your applications and updates from a central location—no need to tinker in separate areas within Windows—and it won’t cost you a dime. Still, I’d like to see a more stable build, as well as the ability to uninstall toolbars and plugins.
