Facebook Launches Trending Section on Mobile

Facebook’s Trending news section is about to go mobile.

The social network on Wednesday announced it has revamped the feature it first rolled out to its website in January, making it easier to explore stories from different sources. Along with the refresh, Facebook is bringing the feature to mobile devices for the first time.

On mobile, simply tap the Facebook search button and you’ll see a dropdown list of the most popular topics and stories on the site at that moment. When you click on a trending topic — like the LeBron James’ Cleveland Cavilers return debut, for instance — you’ll be taken to topic page divided into five different sections showing news articles about the topic, and more.

You’ll also see posts from people who are part of the story, what people in your own network are saying about it, and posts from people you aren’t friends with but who are near where the story is unfolding. There’s also a new Twitter-like live feed of reactions from people around the world.

At this point, the Trending feature is only available on Android mobile devices, but Facebook said it’s working to bring it to iOS as well.

“The way that your Trending topics are determined hasn’t changed, and as always, only public posts and posts that you are in the audience for (like updates from friends or groups that you belong to) will be shown in Trending,” Facebook said. On the Web, the Trending news section appears on the right side of your news feed.
