Good news for those of you using Firefox to browse the Web on your iOS device. Mozilla on Tuesday rolled out an update that makes Firefox for iOS, which launched in November, a whole lot faster and delivers some handy new features.

In a blog post(Opens in a new window) announcing the changes, Firefox VP of product Nick Nguyen said the speed improvements are the result of a “pet project” from an engineering intern by the name of Tyler Lacroix.

Firefox iOS add search“In Tyler’s testing, he saw up to 40 percent reduction in CPU usage and up to 30 percent reduction in memory usage when using this latest version of Firefox,” Nguyen wrote. “What this means is that users can get to their Web pages faster while seeing battery life savings.”

Meanwhile, the update also makes it quicker to look for things on Craigslist, eBay, Wikipedia, and other sites. Just go to any website with a search box and tap on the magnifying glass to add it to your list of search engines. After doing so, you’ll be able to search the site right from the Firefox address bar.

There’s also a brand new menu on the toolbar that allows for easier navigation and quick access to frequently-used features, including bookmarking and the ability to search for text in a page. You can also easily recover all closed tabs with an “undo” button, just in case you accidentally tapped them away. Finally, you can now set a specific homepage, which will open immediately when you tap the “home” button.
