Finding the answer to any question you might have is often as simple as searching the Internet. But what if the answer you’re looking for is hidden deep inside an app?

Google says it has an easy solution.

“Starting today, Google can save you the digging for information in the dozens of apps you use every day, and get you right where you need to go in those apps with a single search,” Scott Huffman, vice president of engineering at Google, wrote in a blog post(Opens in a new window) Wednesday.

“Google Search can make your life a little easier by fetching the answer you need for you—whether it’s on the Web, or buried in an app.”

For instance, say you’re getting ready for the holidays but can’t remember the name of a Christmas movie you want to show your kids, Huffman said. You can now use Google search to get information about the movie directly from the IMDb app.

The feature is rolling out now on Android through the Google Search app and directly in the Chrome and Android browsers.

It works like this: from your Android device, simply search for a term on Google like usual, and apps may appear in the results. For apps you already have on your phone, touch ‘Open in app’ to go to the page in the app relevant to your query.

At this point, the feature is only available for a handful of apps, including AllTrails, Allthecooks, Beautylish, Etsy, Expedia, Flixster, Healthtap, IMDb, Moviefone, Newegg, OpenTable, Trulia, and Wikipedia. Google said it is working with app developers to expand the feature.

Meanwhile, Google search will also now offer up app recommendations.

“Say you want to explore downhill skiing—now, you can just ask Google for downhill skiing apps and get a collection of useful apps,” Huffman wrote. App listings from Google Play will appear in search when they are relevant.
