Hands On With the Toshiba Encore Mini

Today, Toshiba is announcing the smallest member of the Encore family of tablets, the 7-inch Encore Mini.

The Toshiba Encore Mini is small enough to use one-handed, but still delivers a Windows 8 experience, and does it for an impressively small $119 price. We got our hands on the Toshiba Encore Mini for a close-up first look at the baby brother of Toshiba’s tablet family.

The Encore Mini is the smallest of Toshiba’s Encore tablet lineup, offering an even smaller device than the 10- and 8-inch Encore tablets introduced earlier this year. The white plastic chassis takes advantage of a fanless design and puts a textured back on the tablet, making it easy to grip with your fingers. Designed for one-handed use, the Encore Mini is a compact tablet, but still boasts a 7-inch display with 1,024-by-600 resolution and 5-finger touch.

With a quad-core Intel Atom processor inside, the tablet features Windows 8.1, along with a free 12-month subscription to Microsoft Office 365 and a full terabyte of complimentary cloud storage through Microsoft OneDrive. In addition to the processor, the tablet is outfitted with 1GB of RAM, 16GB of local storage, and a lithium-ion battery that Toshiba claims will provide up to 7.3 hours battery life. We haven’t yet gotten the tablet in for testing to verify these claims.

On the edges of the tablet you’ll find a microUSB 2.0 port, a microSD card slot (which supports up to 128GB cards), and a headset jack, along with physical buttons for power and volume. Inside, the Encore Mini offers 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0. Toshiba covers the Encore Mini with a one-year warranty on parts and labor.

During our brief hands-on time with the tablet, I was impressed by how well the textured back provides traction for gripping the tablet one-handed, and the plastic construction was very lightweight at just 12.5 ounces and measuring only 0.43 inches thick.

We look forward to getting the new Encore Mini into the labs for a closer look, but at first blush, it’s a simple but portable tablet with a price that should attract plenty of attention. The Toshiba Encore Mini is available starting today and starts at $119.99.
