How much does an app have to make in order to earn a spot in the Apple Mac App Store’s top 10 list? $5,000? $10,000? $100,000?
Sam Soffes, developer of the recently released app Redacted(Opens in a new window), posted that exact question to nearly 13,000 Twitter followers, whose average guess was $12,460.67. Unfortunately for those looking to hit it big on the Mac App Store, that’s about $12,000 off.
According to Soffes, his app made a whopping day-one profit of $302. That’s 87 paid downloads for Redacted, seven of which were obtained via free promo codes he sent out. And that’s after it was pushed to the top of Product Hunt the day of its releasea Digg-like voting service that helps people find the latest and most interesting tech products to play with.
“Only 59 of those units were in the US. It’s pretty nuts that 59 sales is top paid on the Mac App Store in the US,” Soffes wrote in a blog post(Opens in a new window).
Dan Counsell, designer and founder of Realmac Software, chimed in with his experience.

“I don’t think it’s a good idea to rely solely on App Store revenue to run your business. The App Store is amazing, but you don’t want to put all your eggs in one basket,” Counsell wrote(Opens in a new window).
“For example, Realmac Software has a number of other revenue streams that help keep the company running. These include ads, subscriptions, crowdfunding, and affiliate schemes,” he continued.

“Why would you put the fate of your success in the hands of search and chart ranking algorithms that you have little understanding of and zero control over?” Counsell asked.
To Apple’s credit, the “top paid” ranking measures download volume, not raw profits, so it’s possible that higher-priced apps that rank higher on the list are making a pretty decent amount of cash.
