A beta version of Apple’s newest operating system – Yosemite – is now available for testing. Access opens today, but Cupertino will only grant passes to the first 1 million people who request them, so act fast to be assured a place in line.
Note that not all the features that Apple showed off during WWDC will be available in the beta “since the beta software is unfinished.” For a more polished product, you should wait until the fall, when Yosemite will be released as a free upgrade.
But if you love finding bugs in pre-release software, here’s how you can get your hands on the Yosemite beta.
1. Head to the OS X Beta Program website(Opens in a new window) and click “Sign up.”
2. Sign in with your Apple ID or create one(Opens in a new window) if you don’t have one.
3. Accept the OS X Beta Program Agreement.
4. “Thanks for signing up for the OS X Beta Program,” a review screen says. “We will email you when OS X Yosemite Beta is available for download.”
5. Before you download anything, make sure your Mac is running Mavericks, which is available in the Mac App Store(Opens in a new window).
6. When the download is ready, Apple will email you a redemption code that will let you download and install OS X Yosemite Beta from the Mac App Store.
7. Once installed, play around with it and send any comments, concerns, or bug reports to Apple via the built-in Feedback Assistant application.
8. But keep it to yourself. Apple says that the software is confidential. “Don’t blog, post screen shots, tweet or publicly post information about the pre-release Apple software, and don’t discuss the pre-release Apple software with or demonstrate it to others who are not in the OS X Beta Program,” Apple said.
