Word has it that Apple’s next iPhone may be getting a much better front-facing camera with more features. And you know what that means — better selfies!
London-based developer Hamza Sood recently dug into the code of Apple’s iOS 9 developer beta and found evidence that the front-facing camera on future iPhones will be getting a number of new features, such as 1080p-resolution video, a panoramic mode, and perhaps most exciting — a flash. Hood on Wednesday posted a screenshot on Twitter(Opens in a new window) highlighting the snippets of code in question.
As Tom’s Guide(Opens in a new window) noted, these features would be a huge upgrade from the front-facing camera found on the iPhone 6, which only supports 720p for FaceTime calls and, of course, doesn’t let you record slow-mo video or take panoramic selfies.
As for whether these features actually make it into the next iPhone, we’ll just have to wait and see.
In April, a patent application suggested that next-gen iPhones might include camera features we’re more accustomed to seeing in high-end DSLRs. The application, for a “small form factor telephoto camera,” tipped a separate lens for better-quality image capture.
Apple’s next-generation mobile OS doesn’t arrive until the fall, but Cupertino provided a sneak peek at iOS 9 on Monday at its Worldwide Developer Conference. Developers already have access to it for testing, and Apple plans to offer a public beta in July.

Among the new features arriving in iOS 9 is Intelligence, or Apple’s version of Google Now, which aims to provide you with the most relevant information when you need it — like music for a morning run or an audiobook when you get into your car. Besides that, split-screen multi-tasking will now be supported on the iPad.
