As the year comes to a close, Google is once again showcasing(Opens in a new window) what its users searched for in 2013, and three of the top 10 trending searches are for gadgets you might be unwrapping this holiday season.
According to Google’s annual Zeitgeist, the celebrities and public figures who we lost this year were top of mind for Google users. Nelson Mandela, who passed away on Dec. 5, topped this year’s global trending searches, followed by actor Paul Walker, who died in a November car crash, while Glee star Cory Monteith – who passed away in July – was the No. 4 top search.
The meme-tastic Harlem Shake came in at No. 5, with people uploading more than 1.7 million video versions of the Harlem Shake to YouTube. That was followed by the Boston Marathon at No. 6, and the Royal Baby at No. 7. The remaining spots on the top 10 were reserved for this year’s popular gadgets: the iPhone 5s (No. 3), the Samsung Galaxy S4 (No. 8), and the PlayStation 4 (No. 9) ($799.95 at Amazon)(Opens in a new window).
But a number of devices made Google’s expanded top 100 list(Opens in a new window), from the Xbox One (No. 19) to the Nexus 5 (No. 21) ($689.00 at Amazon)(Opens in a new window). Search traffic doesn’t always translate into blockbuster sales, though. BBM and BlackBerry 10 came in at No. 83 and 86, respectively, while the HTC One was at No. 55. Check out the full list of tech-related searches below.
Google’s Zeitgeist drills down(Opens in a new window) on events, people, and brands, as well as oddly specific categories like famous Internet animals (Grumpy Cat wins this race). The most popular mobile app searches were for Bitstrips, Vine, and Candy Crush, while the most popular social media sites were Tumblr, Facebook, and LinkedIn.
Google also created an interactive 3D global map(Opens in a new window) showcasing the top search trends of 2013 by day in cities around the world. Select a location and time of the year to see what was popular during that particular time.
