Microsoft is not expected to reveal details about its next-gen operating system until later this month, but the company’s Chinese division may have let the cat out of the bag early.
On the Weibo social network, Microsoft China today leaked an image of the Windows 9 logo with a note that the next-gen operating system is “coming soon.”
“Do you think the Start menu at the left bottom will make a comeback?” the accompanying text said, according to The Verge(Opens in a new window).
The post was quickly removed, but not before being spotted by Chinese site cnBeta(Opens in a new window), which published the screenshot above.
Microsoft declined to comment, telling PCMag that “We have nothing to share.”
Windows 9, codenamed “Threshold,” first made in December, when Redmond execs revealed that the new OS is being developed as part of the company’s “One Windows” strategy.
Early reports suggested Threshold will include an option to run the old Start menu, but will also allow “Metro” apps to run in “floating windows on the desktop.” Other changes may include a virtual desktop functionality and Cortana integration.
Last month, there were reports that Microsoft will host a Sept. 30 press event, where Redmond is planning to preview a new version of Windows, slated for release in the first half of 2015. But Microsoft has not yet made any announcements.
