Mozilla on Monday announced it has named Chris Beard as CEO.
Beard has been serving as Mozilla’s interim CEO since Brendan Eich resigned in April amidst controversy surrounding a donation he made to an anti-gay marriage ballot initiative.
“The Mozilla board has reviewed many internal and external candidates – and no one we met was a better fit,” chairwoman Mitchell Baker wrote in a blog post(Opens in a new window).
Beard first joined Mozilla in 2004, just before Firefox 1.0 went live. During his tenure, he’s been “deeply involved in every aspect of Mozilla,” leading the company’s product, marketing, and innovation teams in the early days before being named CMO. Before taking on the interim CEO role, he spent close to a year as an Executive-in-Residence at the venture capital firm Greylock Partners, and remained an advisor to Baker in her role as Mozilla’s chair.
“Over the years, Chris has led many of Mozilla’s most innovative projects,” Baker wrote. “We have relied on his judgment and advice for nearly a decade. Chris has a clear vision of how to take Mozilla’s mission and turn it into industry-changing products and ideas.”
Beard’s appointment comes after Eich, a Mozilla co-founder, was named CEO in late March. Shortly after taking the helm of the company, however, a 2008 donation he made to California’s Proposition 8 against gay marriage cropped up, prompting outrage from many of those in Silicon Valley.
Eich declined to discuss his personal beliefs, but pledged to embrace diversity at the company. But the controversy reached a fever pitch, and Eich eventually decided to resign – only a few weeks after his appointment.
