Mozilla is rolling out the first update(Opens in a new window) to Firefox OS.
The move comes as Mozilla plans to release more phones running Firefox OS around the globe.
With support for more languages and significant performance improvements, the updated mobile operating system is available for current users, and will hit developer phones soon.
Enhancements, include contact management (import, add, and dial names and information), email improvements (draft mode, audio/video and image attachments), and push notifications API, among other features.
With this update, Firefox OS users can now join the masses using MMS support to send and receive pictures, audio, and video files, while keyboard improvements will provide auto-correct functionality.
Firefox browser downloads will also make it easier to save files from the browser.
Also in this update are calendar enhancements like direct event creation and event reminders, single-swipe music search, adaptive app search, and performance improvements for faster application load times and smoother scrolling.
A product of Mozilla’s Boot to Gecko project and first announced in July 2011, Firefox OS is intended to do away with the “walled garden” approach of modern mobile operating systems like Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android.
The first Firefox OS phones – Alcatel One Touch Fire and the ZTE Fire – launched recently in Spain, Poland, and Latin America. In the U.S. and U.K., the orange-plated ZTE Open phone hit eBay for $79.99 (£59.99) in August.
The next round of Firefox OS launches(Opens in a new window) are expected by year’s end in Hungary, Serbia, and Montenegro, the company said today.
“The positive market reception of the first Firefox OS smartphones demonstrates that people like the user experience and openness we’re building with Firefox OS,” Jay Sullivan, Mozilla’s chief operating officer, said in a statement. “We continue to enhance Firefox OS to deliver the best experience for the many people around the world buying their first smartphones.”
