Under the leadership of Satya Nadella, Microsoft’s strategy is all about offering innovation in a”cloud-first, mobile-first” world, the new CEO said during a Tuesday afternoon webcast.

“Every day you come to renew yourself with innovation,” he said. “What you have done in the past is in the rearview.”

Microsoft still exists today, Nadella added, because it has repeatedly innovated time and again. Moving forward, the company needs to think about the new devices and services it is uniquely positioned to bring to market.

The definition of mobile devices is expanding to “the Internet of everything” as more and more devices — such as your refrigerator — become connected. But all of these new experiences are powered by software, he pointed out.

“Everything we do at home and work is going to be digitally mediated,” he said. Meetings at work, home entertainment consumption — these are the types of activities that will be transformed by software, he said.

“It’s not about one single device anymore … the average customer has four devices and wants to use them all,” he said. “Constructing those experiences is front and center for us.”

On a personal note, Nadella said his 22 years with Microsoft has been an “amazing journey” so far. He joined the company at 24 had has worked across a variety of business units.

But Nadella acknowledged that he still has a lot to learn about the company he will now lead, especially with Nokia coming on board. The first thing Nadella plans to do as CEO is spend time on the road meeting with customers, partners, and investors, he said.

Meanwhile, Nadella also stressed the importance of security in today’s increasingly connected world, and said that endpoint protection and device management tools must be baked into products. But Microsoft doesn’t differentiate between business and consumer products — it thinks first about the user.

“We want to bridge the consumer and business markets,” he said.
