Browser maker Opera has big goals for Android, and a newly revamped mobile app to help with the effort.
The company on Tuesday released a new version of its Opera Mini mobile browser, offering a “dramatically redesigned interface” with swipe support, a simplified menu, and a number of other improvements.
“We aim to reach 275 million users on the Android platform by 2017, more than doubling today’s user base of 130 million,” Lars Boilesen, CEO of Opera Software, said in a statement. “This growth will further cement Opera’s position as a dominant browser in fast-growing, emerging economies.”
Opera said its Mini browser, compatible with more than 3,000 different phone models, is the company’s most popular app for Android phones, followed by the full-sized Opera for Android, which is only available on devices running Android 4.0 and above. Opera Mini uses compression technology to reduce the amount of data required to load a webpage — an especially useful feature for those on basic phones or slow, congested networks.
Like previous Opera Mini versions, the latest iteration — Opera Mini 8 — compresses webpages to as little as 10 percent of their original size. The decreased data traffic means users can access content faster, and extend their data plans further, Opera said.
As for other changes, the new Opera Mini Android app brings a revamped Speed Dial feature, a new private browsing mode, and options to customize the browser layout for more “thumb-friendly” surfing. Other new features include a scalable interface with higher resolution for tablets and large phones, updates to the Discover newsfeed to bring you more content across the Web, and a data counter that will show daily progress on data savings, to help keep your data costs under control.
“Opera Mini is the browser that gets you from A to B on the Web, no matter where you are, what your network is like or which device you use,” Christian Uribe, product manager for Opera Mini, said in a statement. “Today’s updated features and design make Opera Mini a browser that’s truly enjoyable to use, with a lighter and fresher browsing experience.”
