Eager to get a peek at the universal Office apps Microsoft is planning to release alongside Windows 10? Now is your chance.

Redmond on Wednesday announced(Opens in a new window) that three of the new universal Office apps for Windows 10 — Word, Excel, and PowerPoint — are now available for technical preview on PCs, laptops, and tablets running the Windows 10 Technical Preview. The software giant plans to open up the preview for the same apps on phones running Windows 10 “in the coming weeks.”

“These ‘universal’ Office apps are optimized for touch and mobile use and are a great way to take your work on the go, no keyboard or mouse required,” Julia White, general manager for the Office product management team, wrote in a blog post(Opens in a new window).

If you’re already in the Windows 10 Technical Preview, you can search for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint in the new Windows Store beta today to test out the apps. If you’re not part of the program, head over to the Microsoft Windows Insider Program website(Opens in a new window) for information on how to join.

Announced two weeks ago, the new apps work on a variety of display sizes (from Lumia phones to the 84-inch Surface Hub), particularly those with touch screens. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote will be pre-installed for free on Windows 10-based phones and small tablets; those with other gadgets can download the software from the Windows Store.

Word lets you review documents, collaborate in real time, and access additional online resources via the new Bing-powered Insights for Office feature. PowerPoint, meanwhile, is getting new Ink Tools for real-time slide annotation. Excel is also touch-friendly, so you can format charts, workbooks, or cells without a physical keyboard and mouse.

The news comes as Satya Nadella is celebrating one year as Microsoft’s CEO. He has had to contend with layoffs and backlash over comments about women workers in his first year, but the focus going forward will undoubtedly be Windows 10 and boosting Windows Phone.
