Topping tech headlines on Wednesday, Google will pilot its customizable Ara smartphone in Puerto Rico.
During the second Project Ara Developers Conference, the tech giant announced plans for the pilot program, set to begin later this year via the OpenMobile and Claro carriers. Google also unveiled Spiral 2, the latest Ara prototype, which can make 3G phone calls. An even more advanced version (Spiral 3) is expected later this year, with 4G LTE and better antennas.
In other Google news, the Web giant’s Translate mobile app now allows users to snap a photo of text for an instant translation—handy when navigating street signs or ordering off a menu while abroad. The application’s real-time conversation feature was also tweaked to allow dialogue to flow faster and more naturally. The new features are available now for iOS and Android devices.
Meanwhile, the new Facebook at Work platform is rolling out to a select few partners, bringing the familiar social network to the office. Employees can connect and collaborate using Facebook tools like News Feed, Groups, messages, and events. The new service, however, promises that employee data will remain safe, secure, confidential, and completely separate from personal profiles.
