Chinese firm Tencent is reportedly dipping its toe into the Internet of Things with an operating system for Web-connected devices.

According to Reuters(Opens in a new window), Tencent’s open OS will power gadgets like TVs and watches.

Tencent Operating System and TOS+ puts the company in direct competition with Alibaba and Xiaomi, which are already making headway in the smart hardware market.

Similar to Google’s Android mobile OS, the new open-source system allows manufacturers and developers to use the platform, as long as they agree to share revenues, Reuters said.

Tencent’s WeChat mobile message app is China’s most widely used, despite government attempts to shutter the instant messaging service. Its shopping, gaming, and taxi-hailing functions are also popular among locals.
