Will Apple unveil some new hardware goodies at its World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC) next month? Clearly, it depends on who you askand the company itself isn’t saying.
Could the introduction of a new Apple TV or even a wearable device like the long-rumored iWatch be on the agenda? Earlier this month, word on the street was that neither of those rumored products would be unveiled at WWDC, but now there’s some buzz building that they could be.
Apple on Tuesday released the schedule for WWDC 2014, which kicks off June 2 in San Francisco with an opening keynote that “will likely be led by Apple CEO Tim Cook with assistance from Senior VPs Craig Federighi and Eddy Cue,” 9to5Mac reported(Opens in a new window).
The site also figured that the main focus of the event will be software, including a major update to Mac OS X and the unveiling of iOS 8. But unnamed sources also told 9to5Mac that “Apple is planning to unveil new hardware at this year’s conference.”
What might those new products be? At last year’s WWDC, Apple introduced a fairly bland update to its MacBook Air lineup while providing more of the wow factor with the revelation of its latest Mac Pro.
So Apple does do hardware reveals at WWDC, just generally not anything to do with its iPhones and iPads, which get their own special, standalone curtain-raisers in the fall.
9to5Mac guessed that another MacBook Air updateperhaps the first lineup to feature Apple’s Retina displaysis the likeliest candidate for the big hardware reveal at this year’s WWDC.
But the site noted that the long-awaited arrival of a new Apple TV streaming media player could also be in the cards, as could the first appearance of the so-called iWatch, which has been anticipated for more than a year.
9to5Mac also offered up some guesses(Opens in a new window) about Apple’s coming software announcements. The site said iOS 8, code named Okemo, will feature “new Healthbook fitness tracking software, improved Maps, and new iPad features.” OS X 10.10, the follow-up to Mavericks code named Syrah, will “focus on aesthetics,” with a major Jony Ive-led design overhaul to the user interface which gives it a more iOS feel, 9to5Mac said.
